The White House

Text Box: Barack Obama has been elected to become the next President of the United States of America. Whether you are a supporter or an opponent of Barack Obama or somewhere in between, the question is whether this is God’s choice or the choice of the people.

The people of Israel were also in this predicament at one point in time. They persisted in wanting to have a king to govern them, and ultimately they got what they wanted in King Saul; a man who clearly wasn’t God’s choice for them, but was allowed by God for the people to find out that it would not work, as this king ended up abusing them and failing miserably in his task. Later he was replaced by God’s own choice, King David. In reality, the people of Israel were rejecting God despite being warned about the consequences of having this king. See 1. Samuel 8.

Could it be that the same is happening now with the choice for the President of this nation? It is clear that the people of America are believing that the new system of government that Barack Obama is promising will bring about a change in the nation and the world, as he wants to move toward a socialistic and humanistic society, which also includes the danger of leading to borderline dictatorship. It is a system that has no room for Godly laws and principles.

That is exactly what I believe is the basic problem of disobedience to God. Our compulsive choices as a nation will be nothing more than a continuation, accumulation, and ultimately escalation of the problems we are already facing in America.

President elect Barack Obama is for legalization of abortion and same sex marriage to name a few of his stands that goes directly against God’s principles. He calls himself a devoted Christian, but what do his actions really tell us about him? Despite all of this, it is still God who allows the choice of the people for this President to go through, and regardless, God remains in control.

Now, what should be our position or stand in all of this? The Bible clearly tells us that all government is placed there by God and we should pray for all who are in authority, including those who do not abide by God’s Word, believing that they will be changed and saved by our prayers and that they will be used by God to ultimately do His will.

Obey the government, for God is the one who put it there. All governments have been placed in power by God. Romans 13:1 NLT

I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. As you make your requests, plead for God's mercy upon them, and give thanks. Pray this way for kings and all others who are in authority, so that we can live in peace and quietness, in godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Savior, for he wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. 1. Timothy 2:1-4 NLT

Solomon wrote this very profound piece about the futility of political power in the book of Ecclesiastes, that perfectly applies to our time as well:

It is better to be a poor but wise youth than to be an old and foolish king who refuses all advice. Such a youth could come from prison and succeed. He might even become king, though he was born in poverty. Everyone is eager to help such a youth, even to help him take the throne. He might become the leader of millions and be very popular. But then the next generation grows up and rejects him! So again, it is all meaningless, like chasing the wind. Ecclesiastes 4:13-5:1 NLT

That is why our trust should be in God Almighty only and not in any presidential political power!
